HIV in Florida: Opportunities for Funders to Address a Growing Epidemic

March 14th 9:30 am – 12:00 pm, Fort Lauderdale

While the number of new HIV cases are dropping across the United States, three times as many people are diagnosed in South Florida compared to other parts of the country. In fact, Florida currently ranks as the top state in terms of new HIV diagnoses. Seven counties in Florida – including Broward and Miami-Dade – will be a focus of the Administration’s new “Ending the HIV Epidemic” plan, officially launched during the President’s recent State of the Union address.  Key factors behind Florida’s HIV epidemic include the high rate of tourism, increases in both crystal meth and opioid use, cultural barriers to care and prevention, and stigma.

Recent data from Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA) show that private funding for HIV-related efforts in Florida totaled $3.8 million in 2017, just two percent of total HIV-related philanthropy to the U.S. that year.

Join us for a funder-only strategy session to learn about the state of the HIV response in Florida and what national and local funders are doing to change the trajectory of the epidemic in the state.
